My Summer Saviour: Culottes.

Summer is hot. Summer is sweaty. And chub rub is real. So, to make life more bearable in when it warms up I live it culottes. I love how flowy and comfy they are and also how easy to style and cool they look.

These particular black culottes are from New Look via ASOS and I think they work perfectly for a casual day with the girls or smartened up for a more formal work environment.

For this lazy Saturday spent shopping with the girls, I decided to pair the culottes with an old Topshop crop top and my uber comfy New Balance trainers.

And you can still jump around like an idiot in them.

So, don’t be surprised if you see me living in culottes until the weather decides to behave itself and cool down a little.

My Favourite Podcasts.

In the last 6 months I have discovered podcasts, I know I’m a little late to the party but at least I’m here. Throughout my teacher training year I’ve had to commute an hour to school and an hour back, which has given me ample time to enjoy some hilarious and thought-provoking conversations. I sometimes switch back to music when I’m in the car. depending on my mood, but generally I have relished having the opportunity to listen to people talking about subjects I wouldn’t normally hear about or that I don’t have the chance to discuss in my everyday life.

So I thought I would make a quick list of my favourite podcasts that I listen to regularly. Some I have gone back and am listening to all of the episodes and others I have just jumped in and ran with them.

First up is Stuff You Should Know. This podcast takes on a different subject every episode and sees Josh and Chuck dissect these topics with skill and hilarity. They have taken on such varied theme as Remembering Stonewall to How Seed Bans Work to How Champagne Works, all in the last few months. So if you love finding about the weird and wonderful from two really funny and knowledgeable guys (and Jeri) then this will be the podcast for you.

Next is the¬†Elis James and John Robins podcast of their Radio X show on a Saturday 1pm-4pm.¬†These are two of my favourite comedians and listening to their podcast is like being in heaven. ¬†With John’s Shame Well, the Light Hearted Paper Review with Elis James and Humble Brag of the Week there’s something for everyone and if you’re anything like me you’ll end up laughing out loud on a train and have old people looking weird at you. Seriously, this podcast with the Hammer Legends is just too good you need listen to it.

Then, we have No Such Thing as a Fish a podcast from the QI elves and researchers. Basically, four of the QI elves go around and present their favourite fact that they have found that week. The four then proceed to discuss these facts and they end up in some odd tangents, but it is so much fun. A great mix of knowledge and fun where I always learn something.

Finally, we have BBC Radio 4 Seriously a podcast of seriously interestingly stories told a little sideways. This again, tackles some really varied topics that are always told from a slightly off centre perspective. My favourite episode so far concerns a woman telling the story of her grandfather who was a witness to the 1917 Russian Revolution and he had recorded his memories. She then goes to St Petersburg to see where he lived and what he saw. A truly fascinating and personal way to look at such a huge and significant event in history. This is a seriously good podcast (I am so funny).

This is just a list of my current favourites, I also listen to many other podcasts and am always looking to discover more. So, if you have any recommendations please comment and let me know.

The Pink New Look Dress That Makes Me Feel Like A Screen Siren

You know when a discount code drops into your inbox and you decide all you’re going to do is have a little browse? Last time that happened I ended up with two new dress, a black bell sleeved cutie and this pink dress which makes me feel like I know a thing or two about vintage.

With the long sleeves, and Viscose material it is a touch seasonably inappropriate for the hot weather we’ve been having, but on a mild summer day this button up dress is perfect. The pattern is gorgeous, with almost peony like blooms, leaves and birds. The dusky pink means it would work perfectly for any other pale person, especially if you avoid a tan with the same vehemence that some save for cards.

I adore the length of this dress. Though the skirt hits the very demure mid calf height, the buttons end at the slightly sassier mid thigh length

I tend to wear this to work so I don’t normally accessoriese this any further than wearing my fitbit. When Sally took these pictures I paired this with some strappy sandals from last summer, a hat I’d bought 10 minutes before in Primark, and a v old picnic style Primark handbag that’s about ten years old.

If you can get your hands on this gem, I would recommend trying your true size and the next size down. This is a good fit on my bust, but a touch lose everywhere else.

Emily

Ps – forgot to add, this dress can be found here and is selling for ¬£29.99. Currently they only have a size 16 in stock,

Perfect Summer Lipsticks

I like lip products a lot, this is actually my second favourites posts in the¬†last few months.¬†When I did my last shoot with the lovely Matt, I wanted to have four very different makeup looks and lip products are one of the easiest ways to change up a look. So here are my favourites: there’s a nude, a very 80s¬†fuchsia pink and a couple reds.

Collection РVelvet Kiss Caramel Р£2.99

Fleur De Force mentioned this in about six videos, and I had to buy this. A pinky nude shade, this will leave you with change from a fiver, if you can get hold of the shade. After a month of searching, I found this on a trolly whilst shelves were being released stocked.

I’m not a nude lip person naturally, and I find this product surprisingly drying. That said, this leaves a lovely understated look that pairs well with statement eyes.

Bourjoius РRouge Edition Velvet Olé flamingo! Р£8.99

I have three of the Rouge Edition range, and I am stopping myself from buying more. This liquid lipstick dries Matte and doesn’t really budge. I wore this to work with a PJ style top, In an attempt to add some gloss to the look and though the product wore off, it did so slowly leaving a gorgeous stain behind.

These products call for a Micellar Water or oil based cleanser to thoroughly, and gently remove them.

Estée Lauder -Pure Color Envy Matte 320 Volatile Р£26.00

This was an indulgent purchase. I spend my boots points once a year on premium beauty, last year it was Dior, and this year it was Estée Lauder. After making my friend Katie and Katie run around boots with me swatcjing every red imaginable I settled on this highly pigmented Matte red. After getting this applied, I fell in love and brought it home.

This is still a special purchase and I afore wearing it. It needs more frequent touch ups than MACs Ruby Woo, but it is such an incredible colour and formula it more than makes up for it.

Revlon РColorburst Lipstick Butter Candy Apple Р£7.99

A gorgeous sheer red, I fall back on this when I need a low maintenance pick me up. Very moisturisinf and lightly staining this wears well. An easy, every day red.

Though it does appear that Revlon have now pulled this line which makes me a bit sad.

What are your favourite lipsticks? Do they change from season to season, or is it a continuous love?

Embroidery : A White Shirt

There are some trends I wouldn’t touch with a Barge Poll (Ath-Lesuire/ Sports Luxe), there are some I admire from afar (Harem Pants) and then I embrace some trends whole heartedly. My favorite in 2017 thus far have been; Bell Sleeves, and Embroidery. Both add such a fun detail, that shouldn’t date new pieces to a wardrobe too heavily.

Especially if you incorporate a trend within a wardrobe essential like a white blouse (or a blue striped blouse with a trendy detail). This embroidered beauty has a Mandarin collar, very flattering 3/4 length sleeves and falls out in a slight gather from just above the bust leaving a very flattering fit. The material feels very high quality, and is such a pure white.

I don’t have anything like it in my wardrobe, and it’s the sort of piece that can easily be used for work, a social event, or a formal event (such as a Hen Do). This top came from¬†Matalan, and was very reasonably priced at ¬£16. I adore this embroidery as its so unique compared to the other pieces I’ve seen, with an almost Hungarian theme.

What do you think, how would you style this shirt?

McDonalds New George Street, Plymouth: A Store Redesign

Wednesday last week, I got invited to a McDonald’s event. It was so exciting to visit somewhere on a blogger level, that had such a big part in my life. The New George Street Store will always mean two things for me:

  • Birthday parties
  • Pre work breakfasts

If you haven’t tried a cream cheese bagel, you are missing out. On a Sunday Morning, when I would get into work nearly 40 minutes before my shift i would sit with a bagel and a magazine, as an affordable way to have a healthy breakfast choice. I have so much love for this brand.

This event was to show Bloggers how stores gave been redesigned to be focused upon on customer experience with digitisation throughout. We were given a tour of the kirchens, with a chance to make our own Big Mac’s, it’s crazy how optimised the entire process is. Everything from 7g of onions per burger, to pickles places purposely to enable a bite with every mouthful.

Kiosks

The Kiosks are a pretty interesting new additions to McDonald’s, they allow a user to place and pay for an entire order without having to queue at the till bank. They’re exciting for a number of reasons (ontop of enabling you when you feel antisocial and you want to avoid other people).

  1. They allow you to see all the nutritional information of an item, and to see all the sides available. In the Plymouth New George Street Store, the number of side salads ordered with a meal have increased drastically since these have been installed.
  2. Ordering food becomes fun for kids, because they can be accessed m a lower height. This also, means they have been optimised for wheel chair users.
  3. They have the option for vouchers, meaning you can save money easily.
  4. Table service

They are a method of digitisating the stores. They also have tablets available for use. These have Pre installed games making them an easy choice for kids, and have the option for email access if you need to catch up on work

Table service

When placing a kiosk order you can either collect a number receipt and weight downstairs, or opt for table service. Table service allows you to chose a numbered stand, enter this number in the kiosk and sit anywhere in the restaurant whilst waiting for your order to arrive. They operate with blue tooth, allowing staff to see where you are sitting. Nicole and I used this option after the event for McFlurrys, and were adding boomerangs of our icecreams to our instagram stories within five minutes

Honestly, this was one of the best events I’ve been invited to as a blogger. Brands like Lush and No7 constantly smash it out of the part, and McDonald’s did too on this occasion. The beauty of the event was in it’s simplicity, we were given a peek behind the screen at what made such a fast paced restaurant work by people who were passionate about thier job and the team around them. I expected being in such a busy kitchen to be daunting and feel constantly in the way, but instead we were surrounded by people who were more than competent at the tasks around them, who worked at a normal stress free pace.

Talking to David about his journey from part timer whilst completing his studies to Franchisee was intriguing. We finished the event by discussing how much McDonald’s did locally for the community, from sponsoring spots kits to arranging clean ups of beauty spots and sitting on community boards.

Thank you McDonald’s; for an invitation into one of your restaurants, a chance to pick the brains of your workforce, and for sponsoring this post. Read more about the changes¬†here.

My current wardrobe go to: The Denim Dungaree Dress

I bought this from Matalan back in November, I wore this once or twice over the winter and then it made its way to the back of my wardrobe. When we got the first signs of spring back in April, I was reaching for the again, here are my favourite ways to style this:

Winter Warmer

This is the perfect cold day outfit. You get a pop of colour from the hat and scarf, and nothing but snuggly comfort from the thin knit top, the knit also helps balance out proportions with this loose fitting dress.

Outfit details here

Leather bomber

This outfit is perfect for the British Springtime, the jacket takes the chill off any breeze whilst the broderie anglais/ laser cut shirt let’s you keep cool. Pair with a vest for warmth, or nude underwear to keep cool. This is probably my favourite look, as it seems so polished.

Jacket – Asda¬†– Top – Matalan –¬†Dress – Matalan –¬†Bag – River Island –Boots – Clarks

The striped top

You can just see the main detail of this outfit, the lovely thick 3/4 length sleeve stripped top. An easy style piece that seems to work with everything.

Top – River Island

A casual tee

The bright yellow tee and floral print scarf make this the most casual of these outfits, especially paired with these converse style shoes from Primark.
